When you consider that the average first-class seat costs as much as £100,000 to design and build, the capital’s expertise in aviation engineering is quite the niche industry. “London certainly punches above its weight in designing the insides of planes,” says Ben Orson, managing director of JPA. “There’s a sense that British resourcefulness is best at resolving tricky engineering problems and making use of limited space. When Asian and Middle Eastern carriers spend billions on plane orders, they come here to fit them out.”
